Featured Quote!!!

What a fantastic Friday upon which to read a fabulous quote from the Bible!! This is a scripture I found while having my devotions one morning..........."Be thou my strong habitation, where unto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress." Psalm 71:3 KJV
What a challenge this verse gives me. God is my strong habitation or (place to live) and there is no limit to how long I can stay there and no deadline to meet......"thou hast given commandment to save me", God's guidelines for me are there to save me from the pitfalls and traps that the enemy would have me fall into, and nothing can touch me that doesn't pass through his hands first!! I love this thought of complete and utter dependence upon God , for  it is in those times of absolute dependence that God works best!!I hope this encourages you as much as it has me. Have a wonderful Friday everyone!!!

Thursday's Decorating Ideas!!

It's Thursday everyone!! And today I have some fun fall decorating ideas to share with you.
This nifty thrifty idea can set a whole new look to your fall decor!! You will need: an artificial (or real) pumpkin, and a a couple of yrds. or so of lace, ribbon or scrap-booking paper(depending on the size of pumpkin), and glue. Glue the desired pattern onto the pumpkin and "PRESTO" a whole new look!!!
~Mumpkins~ You will need: Various sizes of artificial or real pumpkins, a bush of fall flowers(such as orange mums, yellow daisies, etc...), and glue(hot glue or rubber cement is best). Glue the flowers all over the pumpkin leaving no gaps or spaces, you can sustitute the flowers for corks, nut shells,leaves,etc.... for an entirely new look, be creative!!
~Gourd -a-head and be creative!!~                                                                                                 Not sure what to do with those gourds that your neighbor keeps handing out with such abundance!?? Try this neat little trick. Cut off the tops and hollow out the gourds( if you are going to display them, cut them off at different heights to give you a balanced arrangement),then use them as vases in which to display your fall foliage. Hint: These also make excellent gifts!!!:)Enjoy

The Hospitality of Touch..............

Welcome once again to our Thursday edition of" Hospitality at The Coffee Cottage." This is the last of the five hospitality senses, the sense of "Touch." Maybe you've heard the phrase of "line and texture" in the interior decorating world. What this means is you not only want to give your guests something appealing to the eye but also something that gives a three dimensional effect, something that can be touched, handled, or give the illusion of  such. This look and feel can be accomplished by something as simple as a bowl full of shiny golden hued apples on a coffee table or fresh pine bows draped on a fireplace mantle. These fun ideas don't have to be anything extreme or time consuming, just use everyday things and make them come to life!!!Here are some fun tips that maybe will get your creative juices flowing!!
Tip #1. You can find these apothecary jars at craft stores, or second-hand stores. Change them out year round!!!Artificial fruit can be found at craft stores, dollar stores,etc....
Tip #2. The great idea in this decorative display is the pumpkin on the cake plate. Be adventurous and get a couple different sizes of plates and pumpkins , spray paint them all the same color to tie them together and use various colors of real or artificial pumpkins. Display on a table or counter with a garland of fall pip berries or foliage!!
Tip #3. Don't forget the outside decor!! These are such fun, get three different sized real or artificial pumpkins and a large planter-use sticker house numbers or the heavy duty plastic or iron ones-glue or stick on your house number, fun saying,or family monogram-add some fall foliage for a splash of pretty!!Place where you and your guests can enjoy them, either out doors or tucked in a corner! Enjoy:)

It's Hospitality Thursday!!!!!!

Hello once again everyone!! Can you believe it's already Thursday!? Last week we talked about the third hospitality sense, "Hearing". This week we will be discussing TASTE.........I'd have to say this is one of my favorites because I love food presentation, and cooking, but as ladies sometimes we tend to try too hard until this simple job becomes an immense chore.
Alda Ellis in her book "The Gentle Art of Hospitality" says this,"Giving your guests something to eat or drink is an immdiate offering of hospitality. It doesn't have to be elaborate fare. No person is too small for God's love , and no offering is too insignificant for God's honor. A glass of ice water with a slice of lemon on the rim, a cup of tea, or a soda offered is a thoughtful thing to do. Make this gesture of kindness to the letter carrier on a hot day, to your son just home from school,or to your husband coming in the door from work. No one can solve the problems of the world, but we can start with thoughtfulness and kindness."
Use this little system to remind yourself to simplify.....KISS-Keep-It-Simple-Stupid!!!So much of the time I find myself entertaining without the hospitality because I try too hard!!! Keep it simple!!:)
*Here is an easy recipe to try on your guests next time you entertain*

Stained Glass Window Cookies
1 12 oz. pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 c. butter
1 6oz.pkg. mini-marshmallows
1/2 c. chopped pecans
1 pkg.shredded coconut
**Melt chocolate chips and butter in top of a double boiler and let cool. Add marshmallows and nuts. Form into 2 or 3 logs and roll in coconut on wax paper. Refrigerate for at least 4 hrs. Cut into 1/2 in. slices when ready to serve. Enjoy!!!

Featured Quote of the day......Friends!!!

I can count on one hand my very best friends!! People that I can share things with and know that they are still  my friend no matter what:) Here are some fun quotes about friendship....and as you read these take a moment and think about your friends, maybe hollow out a little time and call them up or let them know in some way how much they mean to you.......so often I find myself taking the things that are the most important for granted:)
A friend is one who knows you and loves you just the same.
Elbert Hubbard

A friend should be one in whose understanding and virtue we can equally confide, and whose opinion we can value at once for its justness and its sincerity.
Robert Hall

A friend to all is a friend to none.
Aristotle

A friendship can weather most things and thrive in thin soil; but it needs a little mulch of letters and phone calls and small, silly presents every so often - just to save it from drying out completely.
Pam Brown

A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship.
John D. Rockefeller

A hug is like a boomerang - you get it back right away.
Bil Keane

A man's growth is seen in the successive choirs of his friends.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hospitality Sense of ~ Sound~

A wonderfully good Thursday to all of you.....today is a beautiful crisp "almost fall" day!!
The hospitality sense we will be covering today is the "Hearing" sense!!! How important is background music?

Take a minute and think......what was your reaction when you went shopping at your favorite department store and suddenly your ears are invaded by someone screaming out lyrics that you don't understand and most likely don't need to?! If you are at all like me , I usually hurry up and get out or ask the clerk to change it! Music no matter how insignificant it may seem is very important.
Here at the shop I play a soft ,almost classical touch ,of hymn music. I noticed from working at a variety of coffee shops, the difference in atmosphere when my co-workers played their hard rock and roll or rap, there were more dissatisfied customers, and the co-workers were often a little more edgy or ill-tempered.
So I experimented by playing a softer christian station. As a result I had many of my customers tell me how much they appreciated the atmosphere and music that I played.
Now I am not saying that playing "christian" music is a must for everyone all the time, but there is something to be said about easy listening music with or without lyrics.....much of the time the atmosphere you create has as much to do with the music you play as many of the other hospitality senses we have discussed.
For example ,a tastefully decorated home that smells wonderful and spreads a gourmet meal , can easily be an absolute failure if the wrong kind of music is played,it will consume the atmosphere and completely ruin any other of the good impressions you were trying to display.  It is important to keep the background music low enough so as not to dominate or distract from  friendly conversation and the feel of hospitality.Another thing to keep in mind is the volume, find a happy medium that  fills in gaps of silence without giving your guests a headache and overwhelming the simple comfort you want to portray .

Another thing to consider when playing music is the replay button. Most cd/casset players have one of these wonderful little gadgets, and its job is to keep the hostess from having to jump up and push the play button every time the CD reaches the end. So next time you have guests try a cd of Jim Brickman or "Instrumental Praise" by Don Marsh , choices like these will instantly give you a welcome atmosphere that will compliment all the other senses you want to be felt. Hope these little ideas have helped, and have a fantastic rest of the day!!!      And remember~
If you want to make beautiful music, you must play the black and the white notes together. "
Richard M. Nixon"

Friday's Favorite Fall Quote !!!!!

Can you believe it's actually Friday again?! The second of September already.....time is racing by so let's slow down and consider some fun quotes!!!

"For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together.
For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad."
-   Edwin Way Teale

"I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house.
So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air.
-  Nathaniel Hawthorne

"I love the fall.  I love it because of the smells that you speak of; and also because things are dying,
things that you don't have to take care of anymore, and the grass stops growing."
-  Mark Van Doren

"Delicious autumn!  My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth
seeking the successive autumns."
-   George Eliot

"Once more the liberal year laughs out
O'er richer stores than gems or gold:
Once more with harvest song and shout
Is nature's boldest triumph told."
-   John Greenleaf Whittier

"A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made.  The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air."
-   Eric Sloane

"In the garden, Autumn is, indeed the crowning glory of the year, bringing us the fruition of months of thought and care and toil.  And at no season, safe perhaps in Daffodil time, do we get such superb  colour effects as from August to November."
-   Rose G. Kingsley, The Autumn Garden, 1905

"Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting
and autumn a mosaic of them all."
-   Stanley Horowitz
